Wayback Wednesday Series - Pig Girl of Love and Courage: Tonde Burin

The memories from our childhood!
I kinda remember this anime way back when I was a grade schooler, but Tonde Burin (aka Super Boink) is a magical girl parody manga originally ran in Ciao Magazine (in which currently runs Aikatsu!) by Taeko Ikeda. The manga was started in October 1994 until September 1995, with just only three volumes.

The story begins with Karin Kokubu (Kassie Carlen in the dub), a ordinary 13-year old girl in 7th grade, who is late for school one fateful day when she across an apparently injured yellow pig, and it turns out that the pig was hungry, and thus he gets back his health when he ate Karin's delicious apple. As Karin get to her school called St. Ringo School, she discovers that the yellow pig stowed away in her backpack, in which causes her more trouble than ever. Later on she meets the pig again and found out that he can talk and fly. Thus the pig gives Karin a device called the 'Dream Tonpact', which Karin opens it and a pig snout appears and attaches it to her nose. Karin finds the pig again who explains that he is actually the prince of the apple-shaped planet called Buringo (Oinko), whose name is Tonrariano the 3rd (Iggy Pig). He told her how to transform: by saying 'Ba Bi Bu Be Burin!', she transformed into a super-powered pink piglet, hence the titular character. Tonrariano (as Karin called him Ton-chan) tells Karin that if she can collect 108 pearls by doing some good deeds as Burin, she can probably do so. The pearl collection operate on karma, meaning that if Burin abuses her powers, she will lose some pearls. Karin would become Tonde Burin to thwart evil crisis and even use her new abilities to help other people in need.

Now for the voice cast of this incredible anime. Karin Kokubu is voiced by Yuri Shiratori, who is known for her roles such as Mokona in Magic Knight Rayearth, Sayo Aisaka in Negima, Emiri Kimidori in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Nagisa Kasumi in Iczer Reborn, Nanami Kiryuu in Revolutionary Girl Utena (in which she starred along with the late Tomoko Kawakami), and Hotaru Sakurakoji in The Brave Fighter of Legend Da-Garn. Let's not forget that she is also Angelique in Neo Angelique. Yuriko Fuchizaki, who played Karin's friend and mentor, plays Retsu in Bakusou Kyodai Let's & Go!!, Maison Ikkoku's Ibuki, Kazuma of Ojarumaru, Li Kohran in Sakura Taisen, Anthy in Rrevolutionary Girl Utena, and Loki in Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok. Other seiyuu are starred in this series including Chie Sato, Junko Asami, Akira Ishida (Naganuma in D-Frag!), Tsutomu Kashiwakura, Yoshiharu Yamada, Wataru Takagi (Masaru Aoki in Hajime no Ippo), Rica Matsumoto, Kenichi Ono, YĆ«ko Mizutani, and Keiichi Sonobe.

Both the anime's opening and ending are performed by Parquets, who are a two-person music group which are known for producing a number of songs from pop'n music video game series by Konami. And the 51-episode anime is had a run from September 3rd, 1994 to August 26th, 1995.

It is time to relive your childhood memories with Tonde Burin and Ton-chan! And I was gonna say in my words: Go Super Boink, go!!

Before Death Note, there is Burin Note.
