Wayback Wednesday Series - Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances)

It's all about competition. Only love prevails...

Something tells me that I watch this series a very long time ago, even on a bright afternoon. His and Her Circumstances (or Kare Kano) is Masami Tsuda's manga series and it was serialized in LaLa from February 1996 to April 2005 with a total of 21 tankōbon volumes by Hakusensha. In North America, the series is licensed and published by Tokyopop in English. Gainax adapted a 26-episode anime series on October 2nd, 1998 to March 23rd, 1999, and the story is came from the chapters from the first seven volumes in the manga. The episodes then were broadcast in Japan on TV Tokyo and it is licensed for distribution by Right Stuf International, hence the English title. Enoki Films USA also sub-licensed the series under the title that is Tales at North Hills High. The anime was directed by Hideaki Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki, who are known for their directing work in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The story tells us a Japanese high school student named Yukino Miyazawa (the female protagonist), who then is the partial envy of her classmates for her good yet amazing grades and yes, immaculate appearance. However, Yukino's 'perfect' exterior is a partially façade, a charade she had to maintain is to win praise. In the privacy of her home by the way, Yukino is spoiled, stubborn, slob, and yes she studies relentlessly and obsessively in order to maintain her grades. But on entering high school, Yukino is knocked out from her position at the top of the class (I would I have to say 'the top of the heap') by a handsome man named Soichiro Arima (the male protagonist), whose very existence that Yukino would be considered a threat to the praise on which she has thrived for, and thus she vowed to destroy Soichiro. When he confesses that he had a crush on Yukino, she rejected him then boasts about it at home. Kano, her observant imouto (little sister), points out that Yukino's rivalry with Soichiro comes from admiration, causing her to rethink her own feelings. But before she can figure it out if she likes or hates Soichiro, he visits her home and discovers her being herself. Then he uses the information to blackmail her into doing his work in the student council. At first though, Yukino accepts it, coming to realize that Soichiro is also not the perfect student he pretended to be. Tired of being used later, Yukino revolts and Soichiro apologizes, and thus admits he still love her and just wanted to spend time with her. Yukino then realizes she loves him as well, and together they have to resolve to abandon their fake ways and be true to themselves, though she initially had her trouble breaking her lifelong habit of pretend-perfection and her competitive ways.

Atsuko Enomoto, who is known for her roles including Mai Mishou/Cure Egret (Windy) in Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star and Emi Sendou in Cardfight!! Vanguard, plays Yukino. Before he played Shun in Bakugan Battle Brawlers and Kouta in Elfen Lied, Chihiro Suzuki's role of Soichiro is his debut role. Other seiyuus played in the series were Junko Noda, Takeshi Kusao, Maria Yamamoto, Atsushi Kisaichi, Yuka Koyama, Yuki Watanabe, and many more including Tomomichi Nishimura.

So what are you waiting for? Relive the incredible comedic-dramatic and romantic show that is His and Her Circumstances.
