When you are a kid (or a heart), what could remember watching this classic drama anime? Next only to Princess Sarah, Daddy Long Legs, Dog of Flanders, you name it, you know it. But I am talking about Romeo's Blue Skies.

Alternatively titled 'Romeo and the Black Brothers' in which is the official English name given by the studio, this incredible 33-episode anime series is part of the World Masterpiece Theater, Nippon Animation's most-celebrated franchise. Kôzô Kuzuha directed the series and it's aired on TV Tokyo from January 15th, 1995 to December 17th of the same year. The anime is based on a 1941 novel called 'Die schwarzen Brüder (The Black Brothers)' written by Swiss author Lisa Tetzner (1894 - 1963). In the Philippines, it is known for the title called. 'Mga Munting Pangarap ni Romeo (or Romeo's Simple Dreams)', and everyone love the series for its story context.

Romeo is a 11-year old boy who who lives with his family in a small village in Switzerland in peaceful poverty. One fateful day, Romeo bravely sells himself (at that age?) as a chimney sweeper in order to get money to pay for a doctor for his sick father. On his way to Milan thanks to a evil man turned his boss named Ruini, he meets a mysterious boy named Alfredo, who is on the run heading to the same fate. The two boys then later swear friendship upon being separated and sold to their new bosses. Just then, Romeo has to learn the hardships of his job as a chimney sweeper. Angeletta, who is the daughter of his boss, has a illness from her heart who is not allowed to leave her room, and she asks Romeo to bring the blue sky with her. To face the Wolf Pack gang led by Giovanni, who constantly attacked them, Alfredo unites the sweepers in a secret union called the 'Black Brothers'. With their help, Romeo succeeds in bringing Angeletta's dream to her. Sooner or later, the brotherhood faces even more hardships than their cruel bosses or street hooligans, but Alfredo reveals his secret: he sold himself in the name of his sister Bianca. Now it is up to the Black Brothers to stand up the truth, to save Bianca, and to protect their beloved leader's life with their own.

The voice actors of the series is indeed a star-making performance for the series. That includes Ai Orikasa, Toshiko Fujita, Akemi Okamura, Maria Kawamura, Nobuyuki Hiyama, Aya Ishizu, Hisao Egawa, Sakura Tange, Katsuhisa Hoki, Masahiro Anzai, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Tomomichi Nishimura, and many more including Kôzô Shioya and Yasuhiro Takato.
