Wayback Series - Digimon Adventure (Part 2): The Eight Chosen Children

"According to ancient legend, our world will be taken over by a strange dark force that will change good Digimons into bad ones. Our ancestors have predicted that a group of children called the DigiDestined will appear from another world. When they arrive, they will come to possess super powers that will eventually save our world from destruction." -Leomon
To conclude this two-parter that I had in my blogging life, here are the characters of Digimon Adventure. And here they are to introduce to you, the Chosen Children (or the DigiDestined in the English Dub).

Taichi 'Tai' Yagami (Kamiya): The Boy Who Hold the Courage

"When we get back, this is gonna make one great story. Yup... but... of course, not a single soul will ever believe me."
Like some boys in the summer camp, Taichi (or simply Tai) is the series' main character, and in addition to his credentials as the partner to Agumon, he is the leader of the original DigiDestined. He might be often put into dangerous situations to the group, he had a impulsive and aggressive personality, and thus eventually learnt that compassion and empathy are the keys to his success instead of reckless courage, yet he always puts his life on the line anytime for all of his friends, particularly Hikari, his little sister. He is also the star leader of his school's soccer team aside from his role as the DigiDestined's leader, and he is friends with Sora at the time when the seven kids enter the Digital World. Toshiko Fujita, who is Taichi's seiyuu, is known for roles in Prefectural Earth Defense Force (as Yuko Inoue), Zatch Bell (as Zofis), Chihayafuru (as Taeko Miyauchi) and Fist of the North Star (as Mamiya).

Yamato 'Matt' Ishida: Friendship's Beloved

"I finally got it figured out. If I'm ever gonna change, I have to do it on my own. On my own. The others can't help me."
He is the member of the DigiDestined, and the second-in-command to Tai, and of course I would never forget his incredible hairdo, as well as his gloves, and of course his partner Digimon, Gabumon. Because of the divorce that he suffered, he is lived with his father Hiroaki (who works in Odaiba TV Station, actually it's the Fuji TV building), and this will lead to his awkward relationship between him and his mother, as he gradually feels that they treat each other more strangers instead of his family, as well as he pressure him to prioritize the safety of his little brother. Regarded as the cool one by his peers, and seen as a born rebel, who yet prefers to do things on his own way. He can be emotional and passionate however as well as his façade, and lies an 'sensitive and introspective style' that comes mostly through his little brother T.K., whom he is fiercely protective. Matt is often clashed with Tai because of his recklessness, and of course, take caution in the Digital World. When he usually resting, Matt owns a harmonica, and frequently played it. The seiyuu to Yamato, Yuto Kazama, is known for his roles in Buso Renkin (as Hideyuki Okakura), Cromartie High School (as Noboru Yamaguchi aka 'The Unsinkable Battleship'), The Prince of Tennis (as Billy Cassidy), and Wangan Midnight (as Yasuhiko Miki).

Sora Takenouchi: The Bearer of Love

"Now that you boys have holes in your heads, maybe your brains will get more oxygen."
A member of the DigiDestined along with her partner Biyomon, and she is of course, a tomboy. Like Matt, Sora is also takes caution in the Digital World because of Taichi's recklessness, and thus serving it as the group's mother figure. Sora is best friends with Taichi and a member of the soccer team with Koushiro in addition to her role as a DigiDestined. Kind and very responsible, and very protective and caring, Sora's first instinct is being to try and help others in any way that she can. She will then not turn them down, even at the cost of her own well-being when she feels someone needs her helping hand. We all know Sora's seiyuu that is Yuko Mizutani. Through her entire career, she is known for her roles in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (as Sarah Zabiarov), Sailor Moon Crystal (as Usagi's mom, Ikuko), and The Rolling Girls (as Aya Suzumoto). And you know what, she is known as the dubber of actressess Sarah Michelle Gellar and Meg Ryan.

Koushiro 'Izzy' Izumi: Sourcemaster of Knowledge

"You're going to need a password! You can use mine to get on the Internet: 'Prodigious'!"
Izzy was of course, the computer genius of the group, and he is one of the DigiDestined, along with his insect partner Tentomon. He spends a large fraction of his time trying to figure some stuff out using his laptop called 'PiBook (portmanteau of 'pineapple' and 'notebook')'. And yes, Izzy's very intelligent and of course, knowledgeable, and yet he often gets lost in some though while trying to figure out something new. When he is extremely curious about the Digital World's nature, and thus ceaselessly works to learn whatever there is to know about it. He is quick to help his friends, and he is of course dutiful and resourceful. In the past when Izzy's a baby, his biological father is a genius mathematician. One day, both Izzy's biological parents were killed in a car crash, only to leave the infant Izzy survive the crash. Later, a distant relative of his biological father, Masami Izumi, and his wife Kae, adopts Izzy, and started to raise him. When he couldn't sleep one night, he overheard the conversation of his parents talking about him being adopted. As a result, he decides to subconsciously distant himself from them and begins to focusing on his computer. But later on in many episodes, Izzy eventually accepted them as his true parents after both Masami and Kae revealed the story of his adoption to him. Umi Tenjin, who is his seiyuu, is best known for roles in Ojamajo Doremi (as Misaki Shibayama), Full Moon o Sagashite (as Sora) and Hunter x Hunter (as Ponzu, Zushi and Koltopi).

Mimi Tachikawa: Sincerity's Guardian

"I'm gonna sit here and stare at the flowers until everyone starts getting along."
With her partner Palmon on her side, Mimi is one of the DigiDestined, and a girl who had been pampered for her entire life, and thus such she is rather spoiled and prissy. But however she is actually a caring and sweet person, who dislikes fighting and is sensitive to the feelings of others. Honest (sometimes brutally) and purehearted, and yet she never means to truly harm others. Mimi can be very ditzy at times, and had rather a wild imagination. Mimi learns that sometimes fighting is necessary to protect the ones that she loves, and thus becoming resilient and more confident. Mimi is living with her parents, despite that she is the only child of the family. My favorite seiyuu, Ai Maeda, voices the pink-colored cowboy hat girl, and she is known for her career roles in Xenosaga (as Shion Uzuki), Sailor Moon Crystal (as Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto), Zatch Bell! (as Megumi Oumi), Yes! Precure 5 (as Karen Minazuki/Cure Aqua) and the Warriors franchise (as Oichi).

Jo 'Joe' Kido: The Protector of Reliability

"Would you please stop taunting the deranged android?"
Joe is partially starts out as a panic attack-inducing worrywart of the group, to the point that he is being a nervous wreck. However, this stems from his strong sense of responsibility. Joe, with his partner Gomamon on his side, takes upon himself to the voice of reason and tries often without success as the group's oldest member, in order to steer the other DigiDestined away from reckless actions. Joe is probably often perceived as being a 'stick in the mud' and his 'safety first' attitude is the source of teasing from the others often. His Digimon partner teases Joe the most, as he feels he should be lighten up and look on the bright side of things. But however for all their teasing, the DigiDestined trust and respects Joe, because they will know that he can be relied on to be brave and selfless when things just go south. Joe is of course, intelligent like Izzy, and has some practical knowledge far beyond the most of the group, including his knowledge of astronomy and first aid (because he is studying to become a doctor). Joe is yet also an extremely clumsy (told you!) person, and often found himself falling on dropping things, or his face. Joe's family is come from a long line of medical practitioners, and he is the family's youngest brother of three. His eldest brother Shin (Jim in the English dub), studied medicine, while his 2nd eldest brother Shuu, studied anthropology under the tutelage of Haruhiko Takenouchi (aka Sora's dad). Masami Kikuchi, the voice behind the glasses-wearing DigiDestined, is known for roles in The Prince of Tennis (as Hiroshi Wakato), Air Gear (as Onigiri), Grappler Baki (as Baki Hanma), and Tenchi Muyo! (as Tenchi Masaki).

Takeru 'T.K.' Takaishi: Beloved Guardian of Hope (Holy Hand Grenade #1)

"Just when I think this place is the bomb, it all goes creepy on me again!"
OH HELL YES MY FAVORITE BABY BOY! Takeru (or T.K. for short) is amiable and very cheerful, and doesn't like when others are sad or fighting, and thus he will do anything in his power in order to make others happy. As the youngest member of the original DigiDestined, he is of course very protective of his loved ones, especially after the sacrifice of his Digimon partner, Patamon (Spoiler Alert: Angemon (Patamon's champion level) beat the hell out of Devimon with one blow), and thus he will take his duty as the Digital World's protector very seriously. He might be rather optimistic, and he always tries to keep a smile on his face. Being the youngest of the group as a small child, T.K. is of course naive, and doesn't understand the big picture, and more prone to tears than the other children. He then does his best to keep it up with the older children, and he later grows to become resourceful and very independent. T.K. is the only DigiDestined who didn't live in Odaiba, but instead he lives with his mother Natsuko (Nancy), who works as a newspaper reporter, as a result of her divorce with Hiroaki. The following season, he is moved to Odaiba and lives in the same apartment building as Miyako (Yolei) Inoue and Iori (Cody) Hida lived. The thing is, T.K. had a grandfather who lived in France, making him and his brother Matt at least 1/4 French as stated in the episode (Digimon World Tour, Pt. 2). T.K. had two seiyuus as I will explain it. First off is Hiroko Konishi, who voiced him in the anime adaptation, and was known for roles in Jubei-chan (as Jiyu Nanohana), Magic User's Club (as Sae Sawanoguchi), Fushigi Mahou Fan Fan Pharmacy (as Nishino 'Popuri' Kaori), Super Radical Gag Family (as Akane Kikuchi), Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (as Nene Romanova), and the titular Ojarumaru. And then in the video game adaptation for the PSP, he is voiced by Megumi Han, who is known for career roles in the 2011 remake of Hunter x Hunter (as Gon Freecss), Captain Earth (as Lin), Happiness Charge Precure (as Hime Shirayuki/Cure Princess), Terror in Resonance (as Five), MS Gundam-san (as Lalah-san), Ore Monogatari (as Rinko Yamato), Ushio and Tora (as Kirio) and the upcoming Twin Star Exorcists (as Benio Adashino).

Hikari 'Kari' Yagami (Kamiya): Divine Inheritor of Light (Holy Hand Grenade #2)

"Being a Digidestined means that sometimes you have to save the world, even if you're the one who caused the problem."
Hikari is well-known in the Myotismon arc as she is called 'The Eighth DigiDestined'. Yes, she is also my favorite, next to T.K., and she is indeed the other half of #TeamHolyHandGrenade, along with her Digimon partner Gatomon (Tailmon in the Japanese original). Kari (or Hikari) partially sweet and kind by nature, she is always looking for the best in people, and she avoids fighting them whenever possible. But still, Kari can be serious, especially in some drastic situations. Kari tends to consider her entire safety as secondary to the safety of others. She is prone to illness (due to the fact that she did not attend summer camp because of her poor health), but then becomes to grow out of it as a young child. Why Kari is so much special unlike the other DigiDestined? She is shown to have a unique connection to the light and the darkness, in which it seems to be related to her associated trait of the Crest of Light. Kari is then empowered by the powers of light on one hand, but then on the other hand, is very suspectible to the powers of darkness, in which it leading her to empowered by the light and weakened by overwhelming the darkness. When it comes to siblings, Kari is of course, Tai's little sister. He is very close to him, and yet hero-worshiped him due to his strength and kindness well into adolescence. Sometime between the first and the second season, both Tai and Kari used to share a room, and later on he has moved to another room. Kae Araki (Hikari's seiyuu) is known for her roles in Corrector Yui (as Ai Shinozaki), Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (as Hilde Schbeiker), Fushigi Yugi (as Miaka Yuki), RahXephon (as Cathy McMahon), and Sailor Moon (as Chibiusa/Sailor ChibiMoon, stand-in for Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon in eps.44-50).

In conclusion, I still can't wait for the next chapter of Digimon Adventure tri., in which after I saw the poster of Palmon and Gomamon's mega forms (Rosemon and Vikemon), I feel gone gaga for this.

A/N: The term 'Holy Hand Grenade' is actually my term for T.K. and Kari, due to the fact that the forms of Patamon and Gatomon were of course resembling angels. I name this tandem that is based on the actual fictional grenade from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Hey Digimon, hey Digimon! Monster friends to the boys and girls! Hey Digimon, hey Digimon! Champions of the Digital World!
