Miaka and the Suzaku Seven (aka the ancient version of STARISH) |
Ahh romance anime, how could I ever be excited. About many years ago, one of my former neighbors next to my house watched this anime. Why? Because of the kilig moments. One of Yuu Watase's incredible manga masterpieces, Fushigi Yûgi: The Mysterious Play is published in Shogakukan's Shoujo Comic in its original serialized form from May 1992 to June 1996. Starting in 1999, the manga was released in English by Viz Media and it spanned about 18 volumes in total. It became so popular for the fans of the manga when it later adapted into a 52-episode anime series by Studio Pierrot and it originally aired from April 6th, 1995 to March 28, 1996 on Animax and the regular channel TV Tokyo. Following the anime adaptation, three OVAs have released, with the first having three, the second six, and the final (called Fushigi Yûgi Eikoden) spanned four episodes in total. It also has a light novel adaptation too, in which thirteen volumes in total. Shogakukan also published the light novels from January 1998 to September 2003.
The story begins and describes the trials of two teenaged middle school girls named Miaka Yūki and Yui Hongo. One day while at the library (the National Diet Library), the two girls encounter a strange book known as 'The Universe of the Four Gods'. Reading the book results the girls to transport into the novel's universe in ancient China, but almost immediately, Yui transports back to the real world. Miaka however, finds herself the Priestess of Suzaku. She is destined to gather the seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku in order to summon the god (that's Suzaku) and obtain three wishes. Miaka falls in love with Tamahome, who is a Celestial Warrior, and eventually reciprocates and the desire of Miaka to use a wish to enter the high school of her choice begins to shift towards finding a good way to be with him. On the other side, Yui is also drawn into the book when she attempts to help Miaka to come back to the real world; by becoming the Priestess of Seiryuu, working against Miaka out of jealousy over Tamahome and the revenge for the humiliation and pain that she had suffered when she first came to into the book's world.
Many of the voice actors through this popular anime includes Kae Araki (Nagisa Nagase in GTO and Hikari Kamiya in Digimon) as Miaka, Hikaru Midorikawa (Mitsuhide Akechi in Samurai Warriors) as Tamahome and Taka Sukunami, Takehito Koyasu (IM@S's Takao Kuroi and Oresky in Happiness Charge PreCure) as Hotohori, Chika Sakamoto (Lieea in The Super Dimension Century Orguss) as Nuriko, Tomokazu Seki (Shinya Kogami in Psycho-Pass and Sousuke Sagara in Full Metal Panic) as Chichiri, Nobutoshi Canna (Cao Pi in Dynasty Warriors and Shaman King's Lee Pai-Long) as Tasuki, Koji Ishii (Hirutani in Yu-Gi-Oh! and Bertuccio in Gankutsuou) as Mitsukake, and the late Tomoko Kawakami (Utena Tenjou in Revolutionary Girl Utena and Fuyuki Hinata in Keroro Gunsou) as Chiriko. Other voice actors starred here and that includes Yumi Touma, Toru Furusawa, Yuji Ueda, Atsuko Tanaka, Nobuo Tobita and many more including Jun Fukuyama and Kishō Taniyama (right before his band GRANRODEO is established in 2005).
It is now time to relive the adventure (and comedy ones though!), the drama, and the romance that is Fushigi Yûgi.
